Murals for the "land-locked" sailors

With a name like “Nautical Chart Wallpaper” you would assume that all of our clients live on the coastline somewhere and want a mural of their local ocean waters.

Otisco Lake Nautical Mural

While that generally is true, we have made murals for those whose interest is quite a ways from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coast shorelines, we can — and do — much more!

For those who live by a nice lake far from the coast, we can create a mural from topographical maps. This one is a gorgeous lake located not far from Syracuse New York. Topos are wonderful, but they do have a limitation as far as color changes go. We can change the color of white areas, but the green portions are actually made of several colors and resist quality color changes. Still, they make a striking mural for any wall you choose!

Old Chicago City Mural

Another recent discovery are city drawings made in the late 1800’s. Artists like Currier and Ives created cityscapes from maps and drew them as if from a bird’s-eye view looking down at a 45° angle. These are amazing works of art. Remember, there were no airplanes to capture the city with photographs. The example we show here is a cityscape of old Chicago, made circa 1890. We were able to wrap the entire room with the Chicago image. You might be surprised to learn that this was done to even moderate sized cities.

Acadia National Park Historical Mural

Another popular idea is photography, especially historical photography. This picture of the founders of Acadia National park in Maine graces the lobby of a hotel in Bar Harbor. Old or new photos make for splendid murals.

Buffy Farley

"Skipper" Steve Morris has been sailing for more than 45 years. Whenever Skipper's sailor friends used to talk about their sailing adventures, it was not unusual for them to grab a chart, unroll it to a certain island or waterway, and tell a story of what happened during a particular voyage. As Skipper realized that nautical charts are used for navigating stories as well as passageways, the idea of nautical chart murals came naturally. What better place to tell a tale of the sea than in one's own home or office than with a beautiful nautical chart mural as the visual aid!

In 2013, he moved to the Coeur d'Alene area of Northern Idaho with his wife Linda. When Skipper is not working on murals, you can find him sailing his Erickson 27' on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

He continues to design custom-made wallpaper from nautical charts, satellite photos, topographical maps and favorite photos.
