Heaven's Art

I’m often asked what areas are the most popular for murals. Certainly Narragansett Bay is one of the most requested. When I look at a chart of the area, my eye wanders throughout the many bays and waterways that make up this unique area. So I usually answer, it is popular because it is the way God designed it.

Having said that, there are ways to enhance the nautical charts of that area. Holly Paras came up with a great idea how to do that. First, she had an interesting ceiling that sloped down from from left to right much in the same way that waterways on the chart slope downward. But Holly wanted us to make the land a dark blue and the waterways white with the labels in the water the same blue as the land and the place names on the land the same color as the water.

Cost of the extra color changes was $100, but what a result. Holly sent us a picture of the room after the decorating was complete with the same white and blue seat cushion. and other white and blue accents in the room.

This approach to a nautical chart mural makes for quite the conversation piece, don’t you think?

"Skipper" Steve Morris has been sailing for more than 45 years. Whenever Skipper's sailor friends used to talk about their sailing adventures, it was not unusual for them to grab a chart, unroll it to a certain island or waterway, and tell a story of what happened during a particular voyage. As Skipper realized that nautical charts are used for navigating stories as well as passageways, the idea of nautical chart murals came naturally. What better place to tell a tale of the sea than in one's own home or office than with a beautiful nautical chart mural as the visual aid!

In 2013, he moved to the Coeur d'Alene area of Northern Idaho with his wife Linda. When Skipper is not working on murals, you can find him sailing his Erickson 27' on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

He continues to design custom-made wallpaper from nautical charts, satellite photos, topographical maps and favorite photos.
