Making a good idea into a great idea!

I love Coast Living magazine!  If you are fortunate enough love the salty bouquet of the ocean breeze and just happen to LIVE there, well, you will really enjoy this magazine.

What happens a lot in the magazine is are features of the designers who blend beach ambiance into a decorating scheme for your home.

I’m happy to report that nowadays, more designers are getting on board with ordering nautical chart murals for their clients.  In fact, most of my business comes from interior designers and professional decorators.

Which brings me to page 34 of the June 2014 issue of Coastal Living.  In the section highlighting designers, is a feature on Gideon Mendelson, written by Brooke Showell.  The story is interesting, but the nautical charts featured on his page as a design element, are – well – nautical charts.

Kudos to Gideon for recognizing that nautical charts are great for decorating, but he missed the greater point.  If a chart is appropriate for decorating – and it is – why limit yourself to the standard size the chart comes in?  Gideon could have taken a particular section of one of the charts and had our company help him enlarge it fill the entire wall!

Besides, charts are NOT wallpaper!  They were not meant to have the life of quality wallpaper, do not meet the fire codes of professional grade wallpaper, and are not well-suited for high-moisture rooms like bathrooms and kitchens.

Take home message: Don’t YOU make the same mistake!  Work with us at Nautical Chart Wallpaper and who knows?  Perhaps you can have YOUR design featured in Coastal Living someday.  Such glory might even make Gideon Mendleson envious of your bold and creative style!

(You should have called us first, Gideon!)

"Skipper" Steve Morris has been sailing for more than 45 years. Whenever Skipper's sailor friends used to talk about their sailing adventures, it was not unusual for them to grab a chart, unroll it to a certain island or waterway, and tell a story of what happened during a particular voyage. As Skipper realized that nautical charts are used for navigating stories as well as passageways, the idea of nautical chart murals came naturally. What better place to tell a tale of the sea than in one's own home or office than with a beautiful nautical chart mural as the visual aid!

In 2013, he moved to the Coeur d'Alene area of Northern Idaho with his wife Linda. When Skipper is not working on murals, you can find him sailing his Erickson 27' on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

He continues to design custom-made wallpaper from nautical charts, satellite photos, topographical maps and favorite photos.
